Sandra Squires
Photographic Portrait Painter

15 years of precision. Art across every Medium

I don’t just take pictures. I use fifteen years of professional experience to create atmospheric, emotion-forward portraits that feel like fine art. My work is a direct extension of my background as a multi-disciplinary artist—from years of school for fine art to my work in watercolor and pottery.

The Way I See

"My work is how my memory works."

I have don't have great vision, I wear glasses. In my daily life, sun flares and soft atmospheric haze aren’t technical flaws—they are a constant, shimmering reality. Everything my camera does is something my eyes have already seen.

I’ve spent my career mastering the Nikon D3s and vintage glass because they are the only tools capable of capturing the "thickness" of a moment as I actually feel it.

I don't follow trends; I express a lived reality.

The Multi-Disciplinary Eye

My photography is a direct extension of my work in watercolor and pottery. I don’t see digital files; I see canvases.

Fine Arts Foundation: with a background in painting and pottery, I approach every session with the technical discipline of a painter and am looking for how light wraps around form like a potter.

I look for the lines, textures, and soul that standard documentation misses.

Organic Understanding: As a mountain trail runner, backpacker, gardener, kayaker, and trail guide, I bring a level of understanding of the Blue Ridge Mountains few can compare to.

• Pictorialism: I prioritize "skin thickness" and intentional color science over digital filters. "My goal is to capture the feeling of the memory."

Feeling Awkward?

Me too: The images on this page are my own self-portraits, I include them here as literal proof of my technical instinct. I use a DSLR and no remote, so I get one snap 30 seconds after I press the shutter. I'm not a face the camera and smile kinda girl.

.

Camera-Shy Approved: I’d always rather be behind the lens than in front of it. Because I share that discomfort, I’ve mastered a process that is fast, comfortable, and natural for people who—like me—don't feel like "models."
