Kids at Portrait Sessions | Embracing the Imperfect Moments

If you’ve ever worried that your kids might not “cooperate” during a photo session, you’re not alone. Almost every parent feels that way — and almost every child has at least one moment of fussing, pouting, or clinging during photos. The good news? Those little moments never ruin a session. In fact, they often create the images you’ll treasure the most one day.
That said, there are a few simple things you can do to make the experience smoother (and less stressful for everyone):
Snacks & Bribes Are Welcome - Tiny treats can work wonders. Think small, quick snacks (like gummies or crackers) that won’t stain clothes.
Keep Them Comfortable - Cute outfits may make the pictures next level, but watch for little things like scratchy stitiching, uncomfortable shoes, even a bunched up sock can add a level of discomfort to their experience. Want to be really prepared? Have them wear the outfit before our session, especially shoes.
Bring a Favorite Toy or Blanket - Something familiar can help kids feel comfortable, and it sometimes makes for the sweetest candid photos.
Play Their Favorite Music - A little dancing or singing can completely turn around a child’s mood — and it keeps the energy fun.
Plan Around Nap & Meal Times - A well-rested, well-fed kiddo is always happier to smile for the camera.
Keep Expectations Realistic - Perfection isn’t the goal. The giggles, snuggles, even the pouty faces — they’re all part of your child’s story right now.
The truth is, years from now you won’t just love the posed, smiling photos. You’ll find yourself cherishing the imperfect ones — the way they reached for you when they felt shy, the silly expressions they made, the little quirks that are so them. Those are the memories that make your portraits priceless. Those are the honest stories I live to capture.
Can't wait to capture your story next!
