VA Family Engagement Photography - A Rainy Fall Adventure - Wintergreen Nature Foundation
An unexpected Blue Ridge Mountains family photography adventure, from Raven’s Roost Overlook to the autumn woods of Wintergreen.
Some photography sessions go exactly according to plan.
This was absolutely not one of them.
A hurricane, a sudden Blue Ridge Parkway closure, an unexpected arrest, and a family who had already driven an hour and a half through the rain. By all accounts, this session should have been a disaster.
Instead, it became one of my favorite fall family photography experiences in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
When the Blue Ridge Mountains Have Other Plans
October in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains is something special. The mountains begin trading their summer greens for deep burgundy, copper, and gold. Ferns turn rusty orange, the woods become a patchwork of color, and the mountain air takes on that unmistakable feeling of autumn.
It’s one of my favorite seasons for family photography, particularly around Wintergreen Resort and Raven’s Roost Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Unfortunately, the weather had some other ideas.
After two days of intense rain from the remnants of a hurricane, most of my scheduled families decided to move their sessions to the following weekend.
One adventurous family was ready for anything.
They drove an hour and a half from Bridgewater, Virginia, to meet me at Raven’s Roost Overlook. We had adjusted our timing to work around the rain, and despite the forecast, we were ready to make something beautiful.
Then the park rangers arrived.
The Blue Ridge Parkway was closing.
I spoke with a ranger, who kindly gave us fifteen minutes to finish our photographs. No problem. Fifteen minutes is plenty of time to create a beautiful collection of family portraits.
Except the person in the neighboring car was suddenly being arrested.
Not exactly the peaceful mountain photography experience anyone had envisioned.
After a quick discussion, we decided it was time for a change of scenery.
Finding Magic in the Autumn Woods of Wintergreen
We headed toward Wintergreen, Virginia, where a beautiful woodland trail offered a completely different setting.
No sweeping mountain views. No dramatic sunset. No golden light spilling over the horizon.
Just deep woods, rain-soaked leaves, mossy rocks, golden ferns, and the rich, earthy colors of October.
It was beautiful.
As a natural-light portrait photographer, I love the challenge of working with whatever light the mountains offer. Deep woodland shade requires a different approach than an open overlook, but it can create an entirely different kind of atmosphere.
The colors become rich and painterly. The foliage wraps around the people in the frame. Everything feels a little more intimate, a little quieter, and almost like stepping into an old storybook.
Those rain-damp autumn colors made the perfect backdrop for this family.
More Than Family Portraits: A Love Story in the Blue Ridge
This wasn’t simply a session for three people standing together and smiling at the camera.
It was a celebration of a family coming together and a couple beginning a new chapter.
We started with family portraits tucked among the trees, surrounded by copper leaves and deep green ferns.
Then we made room for just the two of them.
They danced in the woods. They laughed, held each other close, twirled beneath the autumn branches, and shared the sort of little moments that can’t always be planned.
There were kisses and quiet embraces, spontaneous movement, and plenty of laughter.
We photographed all three of them walking together through the leaves, holding hands, and finding their way over the wet rocks.
Those little in-between moments are some of my favorites.
They’re the photographs that bring back more than how everyone looked. They bring back how the afternoon actually felt.
What a Documentary-Inspired Family Photography Session Looks Like
My approach to family photography blends documentary storytelling with editorial portraiture.
I’ll help you find the beautiful light, guide you into flattering compositions, and offer direction when it’s helpful. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands.
But I also want to leave room for you to be yourselves.
I want photographs of the way you look at each other when you think nobody is watching. The way your child reaches for your hand. The way you laugh together when something completely ridiculous happens.
Sometimes that means dancing beneath the trees.
Sometimes it means walking through the woods.
Sometimes it means photographing a family carefully navigating slippery rocks after a hurricane.
Those moments belong to your story just as much as the beautiful portraits.
And they’re worth remembering.
Why I Love Fall Family Photography in the Blue Ridge Mountains
People travel from across Virginia and beyond for photographs in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it’s easy to understand why.
The landscape offers incredible variety, often within a surprisingly small area.
Raven’s Roost Overlook is known for its sweeping mountain views and spectacular evening light. Wintergreen offers forests, mountain scenery, seasonal color, and quieter woodland settings.
The same mountain landscape can look completely different from one day to the next.
On sunny evenings, we might have glowing golden grass and brilliant mountain sunsets.
On cloudy autumn afternoons, we might find deep greens, golden leaves, mist, and beautiful soft light filtering through the trees.
There’s no single version of the Blue Ridge worth photographing.
Part of my job is knowing how to recognize the beauty in whichever version we get.
A Family Photography Experience Worth the Drive
One of the greatest compliments I receive is when families tell me they traveled hours to work with me.
I don’t take that lightly.
Whether you’re visiting Wintergreen Resort for a weekend, spending your vacation in a Blue Ridge Mountains cabin, planning a family getaway, or making a special trip just for photographs, I want the experience to feel worth the journey.
That means helping with location planning, watching mountain weather closely, and being prepared to adjust when conditions change.
The mountains aren’t always predictable. Sometimes the forecast changes. Sometimes the Parkway closes.
Sometimes an otherwise ordinary afternoon turns into a story you’ll be telling for years.
The important thing is that we make something beautiful together.
When this family left, they described their experience with one word:
Magical.
Considering everything that happened before we even began, I couldn’t have asked for a better ending.
See the Story: A Complete Blue Ridge Mountains Family Gallery
I believe there’s something special about seeing more than a photographer’s handful of favorite images.
A single beautiful portrait can show you what a photographer is capable of creating.
An entire gallery shows you how they tell a story.
My galleries include carefully edited photographs that move between classic portraits, editorial compositions, natural interactions, and the little moments that unfold along the way.
You’ll see the beautiful smiles, the quiet embraces, the dancing, and everything in between.
Rather than limiting your story to only the photographs I would choose for my own portfolio, I let you explore your collection and select the images that mean the most to you.
Because sometimes your favorite photograph isn’t the perfectly composed portrait.
Sometimes it’s the one that reminds you exactly how happy you were.
